Pupils at Parkside House School recently took part in the North Tyneside Young Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament Elections 2026, allowing them to learn about democracy and take part in a real voting process.
Before voting, pupils took part in a lesson exploring what democracy means, what candidates are, and how election pledges help represent the views of young people. Pupils also learned how voting works and why it is important for people to have their voices heard.
To ensure all pupils could take part, the voting process was supported using Widget visual resources, allowing pupils to see candidate names and pledges in a clear and accessible format.
Pupils were then able to cast their votes independently, experiencing a real democratic process and gaining an understanding of how young people can influence decisions in their community.
Taking part in the election supported pupils’ understanding of British Values, including democracy, individual liberty and mutual respect.
