Diwali, known as the “Festival of Lights,” is a significant festival in the Hindu tradition. To honor this occasion, our school organised a series of celebrations aimed at capturing the spirit of Diwali while promoting cultural awareness and creativity among students.
During Diwali, homes, temples, and streets are adorned with dazzling lights, and people come together to enjoy festive foods, exchange gifts, and celebrate with joy. While we couldn’t replicate every aspect of the festival, we planned various activities to immerse students in the essence of Diwali:
We started the week on Monday with a Diwali-themed video screening followed by a quiz. Tuesday we had a hands-on workshop featuring diya lighting, mehndi design, diya painting, and rangoli creation, with prizes for the winners.
Wednesday we had paper lantern-making or Diwali card-making sessions. Thursday was Beaded bracelet-making and a spice-recognition activity to explore the use of Indian spices.
We ended the week on Friday with a delicious dessert of ice cream paired with hot Gulab Jamun.
The Diwali celebrations provided students with valuable cultural insights and hands-on creative experiences. Through these activities, they learned about the significance of Diwali and why it is celebrated with such fervor in India. They displayed enthusiasm by creating detailed PowerPoint presentations about Diwali, reflecting their newfound knowledge. They also showed special interest in artistic activities such as mehndi design and diya painting.
These celebrations also fostered a sense of multicultural respect and allowed students to explore rituals from different traditions, helping them appreciate cultural diversity.
