Home News & Events SMSC Focus WC 21st September: Kindness and Choices
This week, students have been exploring ‘Kindness and Choices’ as part of our SMSC curriculum focus on Moral Responsibility and Mutual Respect. Through a range of engaging activities, discussions and creative tasks, students have been developing their understanding of how their choices, words and actions can positively influence the people and communities around them.
The week began with students learning about a variety of local charities and the important work they do to support individuals, families and communities. Students discussed how collective action can make a real difference and used a democratic voting process to select a charity that the school will support throughout the academic year. This provided a valuable opportunity to develop pupil voice, social responsibility and community awareness.
Students then explored the impact that kindness and unkindness can have on others, including how positive interactions support emotional wellbeing. Through discussion and creative activities, such as writing kindness-themed acrostic poems, students reflected on the importance of respectful communication, empathy and consideration for others.
As the week progressed, students took part in a range of kindness-themed challenges, puzzles and creative tasks, encouraging them to think about the positive choices they make each day. These activities helped reinforce the message that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on both ourselves and those around us.
Students also worked collaboratively to create classroom kindness posters, identifying practical ways to demonstrate respect, inclusion and compassion within our school community. In addition, they had the opportunity to nominate themselves or a peer to represent their tutor group when delivering donations to the school’s chosen charity, promoting leadership, responsibility and active citizenship.
To conclude the week, students created wellbeing boxes and developed ways to recognise and celebrate acts of kindness across the school. Through initiatives such as WOW vouchers and positive recognition, students were encouraged to acknowledge the strengths, efforts and positive contributions of others, helping to strengthen relationships and foster a greater sense of belonging.
It has been fantastic to see students engaging so thoughtfully with the themes of kindness, choice and respect. Their enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to consider the needs of others have demonstrated the important role that every individual can play in creating a positive, supportive and inclusive school community.
