Home News & Events MMA Enrichment for Backworth Pupils
During the Spring term, some of the pupils from the Backworth site, chose to visit an MMA gym as their credit activity. The coach Shaj, (a cage warriors World Champion), led them through different holds, techniques and defences, and the pupils absolutely loved hearing about Shaj’s stories of fitness, resilience and discipline.
It was obvious the pupils loved the session so much, they requested weekly classes with Shaj as part of their enrichment, and these sessions have continued to capture the enthusiasm of the pupils, as well has highlighting the talent they have! Although the highlight for pupils was Miss Cook and Miss Heaton sparring in the cage, it has been incredible to watch the improvement the pupils have made in the sport.
Shaj has coached the pupils in their footwork, striking skills, and tips for their overall fitness, and it has been a joy to watch them connect and learn from such an elite athlete. During one of our trips to the MMA gym, we entered just as a group of elite coaches were training, and Shaj was kind enough to pair each of the boys up with the athletes and give them a three-minute controlled sparr. This was amazing to watch, as the pupils held their own against some of the Northeast’s best coaches.
We are excited to see their enthusiasm, respect and genuine skill grow, as the pupils continue to work with Shaj.
