Home News & Events Animal Week – 30th September – 4th October
Animal week is celebrated during the first week of October to promote kindness, respect, and responsibility toward animals and the environment. Here at Parkside House School the aim of the week was to raise ethical awareness and compassion for animals, to look at human responsibilities and to deepen our connection with many domestic and exotic species.
Each day we followed a new theme in school (Mammals Monday, Turtle Tuesday, Winged Wonders Wednesday, Thalassic Thursday and Furry Friends Friday) focusing on many different endangered species, looking at why the species were endangered, what this meant, how human neglect had sabotaged their environment or how hunting had depleted their numbers and now, how we could raise awareness and start and help their species replenish. As well as helping pupils understand the responsibilities of the owning a pet of their own.
As part of this objective pupils learned about the requirements of owning a pet hamster prior to visiting the local pet store to pick out suitable housing, food and accessories before choosing a new furry friend to join our team…Welcome Fluffy!
As part of the animal week competition, over the course of the week, as pupils learned about the different endangered species, they used their new knowledge to complete either a fact file, an animal mask or poster. Here are our winners with their prizes.
In addition to this, pupils were given several opportunities to go on trips and interact with new species. On Monday pupils visited Butterfly World and got to hear about several different species and the butterfly lifecycle as well as hold the butterflies.
On Thursday pupils visited Northumberland Zoo and got to get up close with the otters during a feeding experience, take part in a Zoo Keeper experience workshop and observe many exotic mammals, reptiles, insects and birds as well as visit farm livestock and the much loved young highland cow.
On Friday pupils we were fortunate to have animals come into school for encounters with hamsters, guinea pigs, a gecko, a bearded dragon, a tortoise and even had the opportunity to face their fears and hold a snake, as well as walk our school therapy dog, Fern.
